This is the
"Lantern Festival" drawing from book #2, Clara's Travel Album.
Step
1:
A rough
pencil sketch lays out the basic idea of Clara, Clarence Bear and
friend Pearl sitting in a restaurant and admiring colorful lanterns
overhead.
Step 2:
Each component of the drawing is rendered in
Photoshop, layer by layer. This allows
for more flexibility when making changes.

Step 3:
One by one, components
(characters, furniture, lanterns, etc.) are arranged in a
balanced composition.

Step 4:
With all the components in place, the
illustration is ready for lighting and shadows, the elements that make
it "pop".
